Eric Dolphy, “God Bless The Child” 1963

A stunning solo bass clarinet reading of Billie Holiday’s “God Bless The Child” by one of the most unusual and innovative musicians to emerge in the early sixties. This version comes from German television and the song is introduced by Joachim Berendt.

Bass clarinets don’t produce the penetrating and attention-catching sound of the sax…. however the more you listen to the sound the more you get trapped into the addictive timbre of this mysterious instrument.

Eric died too youg, in 1964, at age 36. Check out a good bio here.
